More
about our DSL Service
What equipment is required for
DSL?
There are a few things that are needed. First,
your computer(s), must have an Ethernet card.
Most computers produced in the last several
years have them already.
Click
here to view our hardware page.
Next,
a DSL
modem is needed, this is an small external
unit that the phone line connects to, then
connects to the computer or router. If you
are running Windows XP you do not need a router
unless you have more than one computer. Older
versions of Windows need* to be connected
via a router.
*It
is possible to connect without a router on older
versions of Windows but, special software is
needed and needs to be configured. Cybershore
no longer supports the installation or configuration
of this software. Frankly, the time and difficulty
involved on both the customer and support sides,
does not out weight the small cost of a router.
Plus a router allows for future growth of your
network, provides firewall protection and in
most cases, eliminates 80% of future support
issues just by turning it off and turning it
back on.
Phone
filters are the last item needed. As DSL and
voice service run on the same line, the DSL
signal needs to be filtered from your phones.
These are simple small connectors placed on
the cords leading to your phones. Cybershore
includes these and the cables needed to connect
the modem and router to the computer based on
a single desk work station.

What
is ADSL?
DSL has two variations, ADSL (Asymmetric) or SDSL
(Symmetric). The most popular is ADSL and is commonly
referred to as just DSL. The plans listed above
are this type of DSL.
What
is SDSL?
SDSL has the same speed up as it does down. This
type of DSL is better for businesses needing to
send data rapidly such as an electronic print
house or brokerage firm. Cybershore does offer
SDSL, please contact
us if you are interested in this kind of DSL

How
does DSL work?
DSL runs on standard phone lines this allows for
both voice and high speed Internet at the same
time, thus eliminating the need for a separate
line just for the computer.
Can
I go wireless?
Of course you can if your computer is ready. Most
new laptops are already have wireless capability
but, you can always add a wireless
card to an existing computer. Windows 95 may
not be compatible for wireless.
Wireless
requires a wireless
router. Cybershore offers all the
needed equipment.
Why
choose Cybershore DSL?

Ten
reasons why Cybershore is the easy
choice for DSL service over AT&T*. Make that Eleven Reasons
-
AT&T will not allow you to send email if you are not using an AT&T email account! Cybershore allows you full use of our SMTP (sending) server regardless of your email address when on our DSL!
-
You
keep your existing Cshore e-mail address and
use all the same software you are familiar with,
such as Internet Explorer and Outlook.
-
Plan
can be bundled with your hosting account for
more savings.
-
You
can keep whatever long distance carrier you
have, and not be forced to switch to the higher
priced "SNET* All Distance".
-
Our
speed averages twice that of what SBC*customers
are getting. Some former Cybershore customers
have reported that their SBC* ADSL is only slightly
faster than dialup.
-
There
is NO SBC Yahoo* software to install. This software
takes over your PC and deletes all references
to other ISP's and puts an AOL* type interface
on your system. It also slows down system performance
as it monitors what you do.
-
There
is NO advertising added to the bottom of all
your e-mails. SBC customers have advertisements
for SBC* services that show up on the bottom
of all their web based e-mails.
-
Free
Spam and Virus protection on your Cshore e-mail
addresses
-
A permanent
"static IP" address is included for
free. SBC* charges extra for this.
-
Same
low rate for residential and business customers.
SBC* charges an additional $10/month if your
ADSL is used for business purposes.
-
A
true Connecticut based company with friendly,
knowledgeable technical support.
A common concern we
hear (especially from phone company ADSL customers)
isthat their DSL connection has slowed down
to the speed of a 56k modem. When they switch
to Cybershore as their ISP, they are amazed
as the speed dramatically increases. And if
you're a business, a slow down in your DSL speed
can't be tolerated.
First consider the
cost of our DSL service. While it is true, we
are a few dollars more than the phone company,
the other benefits we offer more than make up
for the difference. For example, our DSL service
includes a "static IP" address whereas
the phone company will only provide you with
an ordinary "dynamic IP" address.
This is an additional $20/month service, included
free with your Cybershore DSL account. Here's
what a "static IP" address can do
for you:
-
Allows
you to operate your own Web or E-Mail server
-
Allows
easy connection to a corporate server/firewall
-
Allows
for VPN (Virtual Private Networking)
-
Play
online games at lightning speed
-
Video
conferencing
Having a Static IP
address is a very important feature that most
DSL users will want to have. You can think of
it as your permanent phone number for the Internet.
And its FREE with our DSL service.
So when you compare
the value of our premium service... the obvious
choice is Cybershore!
