Important Information Concerning
Your Domain Name.
Protect your website/email and
domain name. I spoke with a very upset potential
customer recently. He was using one of those cheap
web hosting companies and his site was offline and
nobody was answering the phones. A few days later
we learned that the entire web hosting operation
was in some guy's basement that was in the midst
of a divorce and his wife wouldn’t let him
in the house to fix the computers. We couldn’t
move his site to our server because his domain was
registered to the web hosting company. This brings
up some very important points considering your domain
name. The information below will help you understand
the best way to protect your domain name.
Your domain name is one of the most important
parts of your business image. Yet few of our customers
fully understand the best way to protect this
valuable asset.
First and foremost do you
own the domain name? Some of the domain companies
appear to sell you the domain name but actually
keep the domain registered in their name. Second
and equally if not more important are the Admin
and Billing email addresses valid mail addresses.
When the domain is a due to expire a warning will
be sent to this address. If you don't receive
this message your domain might expire and be purchased
by someone else. Once this happens it's difficult
if not impossible to retrieve your domain. Last
make certain your domain has at least six-months
before it expires. It's inexpensive to renew a
domain and is cheap insurance to ensure you don't
forget and let the domain expire. Checking all
this information is easy to do. I strongly urge
you to double check this information today.
How to check your domain
information
Simply go to the following website http://www.geektools.com/cgi-bin/proxy.cgi.
Type in your domain name.
Please do not add "www"
Example just type in "cshore.com"
Scroll down to the bottom
where you will see the expiration date listed.
If your domain is registered with Network Solutions
you will need to go to their site to check. Their
site is a bit more complicated but will yield
the same information. Cybershore strongly recommends
you transfer your site to Tucows. We have been
using Tucows for several years and have been very
satisfied with their service and support. Unfortunately,
we cannot make the same comment concerning Network
Solutions also known as Verisign.
Some of our customers that
registered their domains with Network Solutions
have come very close to losing their domain name.
Due to the difficulty we have experienced with
Network Solutions we have chosen to work exclusively
with Tucows. You may leave your domain with Network
Solutions. However, you will need to deal with
them in the future concerning payment for domain
registration. This will not affect your website
or email as long as the domain is current.
Please double check your information
using GeekTools.com
Do not hesitate to contact
us if you have questions or concerns. In addition
if you transfer your domain to Tucows we can lock
the domain. This service is provided free of charge
and will further ensure the security of your domain.
Tucows was one of the first registrars to offer
this secure service.

Please note the Admin email address must be valid
as this is where the confirmation email will be
sent please see the FAQ's below.
I'm getting notices from registrars
telling me I have register with them.
This is a devious trick by competing registrars
that trick you into registering your domain with
their company. If your domain is current and has
at least 6 months until expiration you can ignore
these emails. However, double-check the expiration
date by visiting www.geektools.com
or the site of the original registrant.
My domain doesn't expire
for months, what's the rush?
$50 a year is $2 a month it's cheap insurance
to protect your domain. If you forget and your
domain expire other companies can easily purchase
it. Also once a domain expires it enters what
is referred to as a "redemption period".
During the early part of this period you can retrieve
your domain for a cost of $150.00. However during
this period the domain is still deactivated and
your website and email will not work.
How do I sign up?
The person responsible for the domain must click
here. It takes approximately 48 hours to process
the transfer. Please note you will first receive
email from Tucows asking you to approve of the
transfer. Please note this will be sent to the
admin email of record (see below). Within 48 hours
of approving the transfer you should receive email
from the original registrar asking for your final
confirmation. Please note in many cases this email
may appear to be SPAM so please check your email
carefully after confirming the email from Tucows.
How much is it?
$50 to renew your domain for two additional years.
Note: Network Solutions charges $60 for two years.
For additional savings you can renew three years
for $70.00.
The ADMIN email address
on my domain is no longer valid.
If you have the login ID and password you can
login and change to a working email address? Some
registrars allow you to fax in a request to update
the email address.
What about .BIZ domains?
In 2003, ICANN the group that oversees the domains
allowed a new group of domain extensions. "biz",
"info" etc. These extensions are not
popularly used currently. However, this may change
in the future. You may purchase a .biz domain
for two years for a special price of $50.00. This
offer expires August 30.
What about other extentions?
There are a wide range of new extensions that
ICANN has discussed releasing: .shop. rec. muse
etc. There also has been a lot of hype about the
.ws (Western Somoa - NOT WEBSITE) and .tv (Tavula
- NOT Television). Thus it's difficult for us
to predict the importance of registering .biz
or some of these new domains.
